Abstract

In the fourth quarter of 2012, traditionally the peak season for consumer products, looking at the market demand, the budgets for motherboards were affected by the crowding out effects. In addition, the demand for desktop PCs expected to be driven by new Windows 8 OS was limited, the global market demand for motherboards was relatively weak. As for the industry supply, since the back-to-school demand and the purchase demand expected to occur during the China's October holiday did not live up to expectations in the third quarter of 2012, in order to boost the third-quarter shipment, some vendors replenished inventories in advance at the distribution channels in September, motherboard shipment momentum in the fourth quarter of 2012 was reduced as a result. Meanwhile, since the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday normally falls in the first quarter, in the past branded vendors would pull-in inventories in advance due to reduced working days and the shortage of labors normally happened after the long holiday. However, due to weak market demand in the fourth quarter of 2012, in order to boost shipment performance, vendors pulled the inventories earlier in December, which had become a major factor bolstering motherboard shipment momentum in the fourth quarter of 2012.
